Upcoming Interview with the author of Crossing the Creek
I love hospice philosophy.
Over 30 years in health care services and I can honestly say I am happier today than in any job I have ever held. For those that are wondering where the job of motherhood and being a wife fit into this scenario - those two titles are not jobs. They are privileges.
I will be interviewing Michael Holmes, author of "Crossing the Creek" on February 6th, 2008 at 11 a.m. (EST) on the North Georgia Community Resources show. His works have re-inspired me. The insight I have gained from reading his books and other writings is opening new thought passages.
At first, I thought I would be intimidated by his depth of knowledge and experience beyond what I have in my background. Ironically, this is not the case. I am just more aware of my ability to expand beyond what is comfortable and grasp new knowledge.
This is fun to know. It means I am not too old to learn and that’s really good news.
I encourage you to join the show but be aware that this topic will not be suitable for all audiences. We will talk about dying but perhaps in a way you have not heard. Sometimes the light shines much brighter once you no longer fear the darkness. Perhaps the only way to release the fear is to embrace it, examine it, then delight in knowing its power is revoked through the act of witnessing it. Once we understand our fear we might be able to make room in our heart for a surprising perspective.
Please visit Michael's site for more information about his books.
"It is quite impossible to understand dying process without first understanding that death does not end life." - Michael Holmes, Author: Crossing The Creek et al.

This year you will write THE BOOK
I feel the new year bringing all sorts of resolutions out of the closet.
There seems to be more of us expressly refusing to prepare resolutions and taking every day to improve in some way. I like this approach.
I think it is important to reflect on accomplishments and feel the confidence and pride that has sprouted from our victories.
Recently, I held a hospice conference call that was extremely edifying for my hospice soul.
I do have a few secret wishes but none of them can be called resolutions. There things that matter more now that I am older. I actually prefer quiet evenings with loved ones over hopes of a great night out on the town.
The one thing I would like to see this year is more people writing their story for their kids and grandkids. Maybe I can advocate for this on the RAK Club.
With that intention, I hope to find a way this year to encourage everyone to write from the heart and experience their soul.

Interview with Dr. Gober
The interview with Doctor Gober today reminded me and others of the importance of the actual day we celebrate our veterans. I was reminded of the eleventh month, the eleventh day, and the eleventh hour. I don't think I will forget again.
Our conversation revolved around military and medicine, family and compassion. In the end this is what we celebrate this weekend anyway. We acknowledge our veterans for sacrificing in order for us to never have to sacrifice.
I thank Dr. Gober for his contribution to the stories that come to our attention during this "holiday". I sometimes forget in the comfort of this country that someone is cold, someone is hurting, someone is giving of every internal and external strength they can muster to help me live in a world where it is made easy to sometimes get a little too comfortable.
I know my family does not read this blog, but just in case....Daddy, thank you for your service to our country and I thank God you made it home to start your family and provide me with a great life.
Dr. Gober, I hope your family can say the same to you.
Thank you to all veterans. Tonight I sleep safe and content under your blanket of freedom.

How a Tribute to Veterans Can Emphasize the Value of Family
By Phyllis Goldberg, Ph.D.& Rosemary Lichtman, Ph.D.
Veteran's Day gives us all an opportunity to pay tribute to people who, over the years, have endured hardship and made sacrifices to protect our freedoms. Some people attend services or parades, others remember more quietly. How do you express your feelings of patriotism? This process of appreciation has many parallels to our own relationships at home. As you remember the veterans of all wars, reflect on the following ideals as they apply to your own family:
1. Identify, for yourself, the significant components of what gives life meaning and what constitutes personal well being, within the context of family.
2. Value each family member's individuality, uniqueness and independence. Let them know how much you respect these qualities.
3. In moments of frustration, recognize that they are ordinary people who have been put in extraordinary circumstances.
4. Try to understand why they feel the way they do and why they do the things they do by putting yourself in their shoes.
5. Acknowledge the depth and richness of your family life and relish the complexity of it all.
6. Feel the embrace, the protection and the support of the family unit as a whole. Express your gratitude for all that it provides for you.
How can you create positive thoughts about your family relationships on a daily basis? Find the special ways to honor them as you work to increase the bonds of family unity.
